Learn CPR & First Aid.

Why wait?

Becoming CPR & First Aid certified is the easiest thing to tick off any "Get-Ready-For-Bigger-Waves" checklist. Although sitting in a classroom and pumping some plastic doll might not sound like the most exciting afternoon, it is surprisingly rewarding to learn.

Vinnie Jones shows how hard and fast Hands-only CPR to Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees can help save the life of someone who has had a cardiac arrest. The Hollywood hardman stars in a British Heart Foundation TV advert urging more people to carry out CPR in a medical emergency.

Here are 2 resource to get started right now:

1) Take a B.W.R.A.G. Course

The Big Wave Risk Assessment Group is founded by elite big wave surfers after and because of the passing of their friend Sion Milosky. After his fatal drowning at Mavericks in 2010, his friends Danilo Couto and Kohl Christensen got together with other big wave surfers to learn CPR. That annual event has grown into a professional organization that trains surfers of all levels around the world on key safety aspects of (big wave) surfing. Each year lives are saved because of this training. Learning hands-on CPR is still one of the key elements of their safety summits, but the program has evolved and will now teach you risk assessment training, advanced breathing techniques, safety products presentations, water rescue’ from single man pick up to jetski rescue’s. If you can attend a course in your area it is worth doing it, because it is much more surf focussed than a regular CPR training. What’s more, you’ll be taught by some of the best big wave surfers in the world as well as legendary big wave rescue professionals in a group consisting of fellow (big wave) surfers.

2) THE AMERICAN HEART FOUNDATION

However, if you can’t afford the fee, or the B.W.R.A.G. is not in your area, you can still find a ton of practical knowledge on The American Heart Foundation website. It offers a variety of different courses and certifications, both in classroom settings or entirely online:
